PRP also called as Platelet-rich plasma therapy, which comes under regenerative treatment. PRP therapy is an effective treatment used for all kinds of shoulder/ hip/ elbow/ knee injuries to enhance quick and natural healing. This therapy involves the use of one's own blood cells. Hence, there are no risks of rejection attached.
Your blood is predominantly made of a plasma, the liquid portion of whole blood. The blood components include platelets, red and white blood cells. The role of platelets is blood clotting. Besides, platelets have proteins called growth factors responsible for the natural healing and the regeneration of new cells. PRP (Platelet-rich plasma) is derived by isolating plasma from blood and concentrating it.
The procedure of PRP therapy
This same-day procedure may take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes. An experienced physician should perform the injection precisely with the help of imaging technology (ultrasound guidance).
There are 8 steps involved in PRP therapy:
Draw blood from the patient's arm vein into a vial (typically 15 to 50 ml).
Process the blood with the help of a centrifuge machine.
Your physician prepares the centrifuged platelet-rich plasma for injection.
Clean the affected joint area with a disinfectant such as iodine or alcohol.
While using ultrasound, apply a gel to an area of skin near the injection site. Press the ultrasound probe against the gel-covered skin. The image of the joint will be viewed onscreen for the doctor to see.
After making the patient relax, inject 3 to 6 ml of platelet-rich plasma into the joint capsule with the help of a syringe and needle.
Bandage the injection area.
Remember to follow major points before and after the PRP therapy.
Avoid anti-inflammatory pain medication and corticosteroid injections for 2 to 3 weeks before the procedure.
After the PRP injection, use a cold compress a few times a day for 10 to 20 minutes to reduce post-injection pain and swelling. Also, do not consume any anti-inflammatory pain medication unless and until prescribed by your physician.
